Gravity Take-Up (GTU) Roll Fall Program

The GTU Roll Fall Program involves design, fabrication, and installation of an apparatus that is installed within the gravity take-up unit framework. The apparatus prevents the GTU from falling to the floor in the event of a mechanical failure. Western helped the USPS develop the designs for all of the various configurations at USPS facilities including the ½, ¾, and full cradle designs. Electrical photo eyes were integrated into the existing controls systems to provide a “soft start” for the belted conveyor systems. Western also designed and installed OSHA compliant catwalks, platforms and ladders to access the GTU during maintenance, and screen guarding to protect postal employees during operation.
