Parcel/Postal

Design Build, Turnkey Capabilities

We specialize in working within operating facilities without impacting revenue-producing operations.

Since 1998, Western has successfully completed new construction, modernization, and maintenance projects in more than 400 parcel and postal facilities. Over this period, Western has developed in-depth knowledge of conveyance systems, sortation systems, specialized equipment, and supporting infrastructure. Our capabilities include engineering, controls, equipment manufacturing, fabrication, installation, testing, commissioning, training, and maintenance.

National, Network-Wide, Deployments

Western has the demonstrated ability to support the deployment of new equipment on a national level. For example, after the Anthrax scare in 2001, Western installed hazardous material detection systems (the Ventilation Filtration System) at 284 USPS sites across the United States. (Sites complete shown on map)

Additional network wide deployments include the following:

  • USPS – Sorter Upgrade Program – 20 Sorters at 18 Sites
    • Over an eleven year period performed 20 full steel parcel sortation machine replacements and IO upgrades
  • FedEx Ground – Extendo upgrades – 50 units at 20 Sites
    • Three crews simultaneously deployed across the country and completed all sites in less than 3 months.
  • USPS – Return to Keyer upgrades – 28 Sorters at 14 Sites
    • Three crews simultaneously deployed to complete 6 sites in 6 months.
  • FedEx Ground – SWAK upgrades – 6 sites
    • Six crew simultaneously deployed to 6 sites and completed multiple upgrades are each facility in less than 2 weeks.
  • USPS – OSHA Upgrade Program – 12 Sites
    • Ranged from a few hundred items to nearly 10,000 line items per facility
  • USPS – Integrated Dispatch & Receipt Integration Projects – 29 Sites including19 in 10 months
    • Installed and Integrated equipment from multiple OEM’s throughout the USPS network
  • USPS – 19 site Direct to Secondary (RIC)
    • Installed thousands of feet of conveyor over operating equipment with limited down time.
  • USPS – NDC Consolidation – 6 sites
    • Large scale surgical demolition and installation of new replacement parcel handling equipment in operating facilities.

Maintenance

Western specializes in the maintenance of parcel/postal material-handling and sortation equipment. Western has an extensive, national employee network that can quickly respond to maintenance needs. The scope of these projects included the routine maintenance, mechanical and electrical refurbishment, upgrade and replacement of system components, and control system updates.

OSHA Guarding Systems

Western has developed passive and active guarding packages for a variety of complex and precision pieces of equipment in the parcel/postal and other industries. This has included systems with interlock switches that were incorporated into the existing PLCs. Guarding and UL-listed control panels are fabricated in our shop and deployed to operating facilities for installation and integration.

As part of a USPS OSHA upgrade initiative from 1999 through 2008, Western successfully completed OSHA upgrade projects nationwide with the scope of these projects ranging from a few hundred line items to nearly 10,000 line items per facility.

Engineering Services

Western’s engineering team provides decades of experience designing material handling and sortation systems, control systems, structural support assemblies, and machine guarding systems.

Fabrication Services

Western operates a 41,000-square foot fabrication and paint facility to build internally developed designs or customer-designed components to include conveyors, chutes, hoppers, catwalks, platforms, ladders, structural support assemblies, or OSHA/MSHA-compliant guarding systems.

Our UL 508A-listed panel shop complements our engineering capability and enables Western to manufacture and perform in-house testing of panels and systems. Panel assemblies range from small junction boxes to multiple PLC enclosures, mechanization control panels, and computer workstations. Our facility can inventory, fabricate, stage, and factory-test even the largest systems
